Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx)

Meet Lexi

7 Years Old • Rescued Resident

The Eurasian Lynx is Europe's largest wild cat, known for it's powerful build, distinctive tufted ears and excellent night vision.

They can be found across forests from Western Europe to Siberia and Central Asia. They are solitary animals although Lexi and Eclipse do sometimes enjoy each others company. Lynx are mostly active at dawn and dusk and are rarely seen by people in the wild. In Europe there are an estimate of 9,000-10,000 lynx present thanks to conservation and reintroduction programs.

Unlike large predators such as wolfs or bears, Eurasian Lynx do not pose a significant threat to humans and prefer to avoid people.

By sponsoring Lexi, you help ensure her continued care, enrichment and long-term welfare, while directly supporting the vital rescue work of our sanctuary.

Lexi's Story

Lexi came into our care during the COVID-19 lockdown after a zoo was forced to close due to complete loss of funding while national stay-at-home restrictions were in place. The animals were rehomed to facilities with available capacity; however, with no placement secured for Lexi, she was scheduled for euthanasia. We were able to step in and provide her with a permanent, safe home.

Over the past few years, our dedicated team has worked tirelessly to gain Lexi's trust. Through patient interaction and species-specific enrichment, she has started to exhibit her natural behaviours. Her story is a testament to the resilience of exotic species and highlights the critical need for safe havens that understand the delicate balance between human intervention and natural independence.

Today, Lexi serves as a vital ambassador for her species, helping our community understand the challenges faced by non-native animals in captivity. Supported by the quiet atmosphere of the sanctuary and the commitment of those who believe every exotic soul deserves to live with dignity and respect.
